As a process Instructional design (also known as instructional systems design) is the systematic design and development of effective instructions, instructional materials and learning activities after a proper analysis of the learning needs. Instructional design is not a graphic design although graphic design plays an important role in instructional design. Graphic design is the use of graphic elements and text to communicate a message. It includes printing, illustrations, decorative techniques etc. As a discipline, Instructional design is the branch of knowledge concerned with the process of researching, developing and implementing instructional theories and strategies.
Professionals involved in instructional design are known as instructional designers. Instructional designers are in great demand in the elearning industry and are generally employed in educational institutions and coporate training departments. Instructional design models are used by Instructional designers: to visualize the problems associated with instructional design, to break down the problems into separate and different manageable units and to faciliate the transfer of knowledge to the learners.
